Solar Flair
Family-Friendly Daytime Rave
A monthly (in the winter) and “sometimes” (in the summer) daytime, mixed arts event series, produced by Toronto-based arts collective Planet Fabulon.
Guests are offered a consent-forward welcome experience as they enter, followed by an afternoon of joyful electronic music, and a cozy lounge filled with introvert- and extrovert-friendly activities and chances for connection. The first half of the day is “all ages”, allowing adults and little kids to dance alongside each other, both embracing their inner child. We program rotating hosted activities, from chair massages, to live art creation, to face painting. We invite guests to self-express with flamboyant clothing, and offer a ‘costume borrowing’ station for those wanting to glam up more. Our bar prioritizes non-alcoholic kombucha, coconut water, and cold-brew coffee. The dancing ends promptly at 8pm, when we downshift to a decompression hour to close out the day, and help guests ease back into the real world outside our borders.
Another pillar of our collective’s artistic practice is the goal of building and sustaining an engaged, valued-based community. Our Solar Flair experiment has succeeded in planting the seeds of an enthusiastic and engaged new community of attendees, volunteers, and artists, many of whom have felt excluded from similar dance-focussed spaces in the past. The shift to a more broadly-inclusive age range, more sociable hours, and a focus on health/wellness has invited many new people into Planet Fabulon’s now truly intergenerational orbit.
Think of Solar Flair as a fabulous house party you don’t have to clean up after or need to recover from by sleeping til noon the next day. Or daytime at a festival where you choose your own adventures and embrace your own energy levels. All within a space governed by the Fabulon values of playfulness, curiosity, kindness, inclusivity, and consent.
All galactic creatures are welcome!
